The Mt Victoria Residents Association recently wrote to Annette King, the Minister responsible for the New Zealand Transport Agency, regarding the dilapidated state of the shops they have recently purchased at the bottom of Ellice Street. The shops have been a target of vandalism and damage, and have noticeably deteriorated since NZTA assumed responsibility.

The Minister states that the Agency does not have a policy of “demolition by stealth”, but notes that no approval for demolition has been granted by the Wellington City Council.
It’s gratifying to hear that the Agency intends behaving more responsibly in the future. However the letter states that the shops cannot be tenanted due to an unresolved earthquake strengthening notice from the Wellington City Council. Investigations will commence to establish the accuracy of this excuse, given that the shops were tenanted prior to NZTA purchasing them. We will keep residents informed.
