The Wellington City Council has announced that it intends tearing up Manners Mall and replacing it with a road, ostensibly to improve travel times for public transport, and consultation on this proposal is open until Friday 5 December.
While there are a variety of views about Manners Mall, other changes are planned that may well impact the many people in Mt Victoria that walk into town – specifically, the Council intends replacing the pedestrian crossings on Courtenay Place with signalised crossings. This continues the long-standing Council policy of removing pedestrian crossings in Wellington, and forcing pedestrians to “ask permission” to cross the road by pushing a button. It is likely to result in a much more dangerous environment in Courtenay Place as pedestrians (particularly the ones that have had a few drinks in the evening) will ignore the new crossings and simply jaywalk.
If you have views about the desirability of these changes, you can make a submission online – but you’ll need to do so by Friday.
