Changes to the website commenting system

At popular request (well, after two people made a point of asking) the website has been opened up to anonymous comments. There are now two ways you can comment on stories:

- If you comment anonymously, your comments will be queued for moderation. This is to try and slow down the amount of comment spam, and it means the comment needs to be specifically approved and released. This may take anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours, depending on current workload.
- If you register for a username and password, your comments will bypass the moderation queue and will immediately appear.

We'll run the new comment system for a few months and see how things shape up.

War Stories for Anzac Day

Crossways is running another superb film fundraiser, this time featuring one of Gaylene Preston's acclaimed documentaries - War Stories Our Mothers Never Told Us. This compelling movie allows seven New Zealand women to talk about the impact of WWII on their lives and their families, and reveals the human impact of the war that swept the globe.

This is a great way of remembering the sacrifices of Anzac Day without the military pomp and ceremony.

This is a one-off screening at the Paramount Theatre in Courtenay Place, 4pm on Sunday 26 April. Tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for children, and can be purchased by e-mailing crossways@woosh.co.nz or phoning 384 - 4770. Limited door sales may also be available on the day.

All proceeds go to the Crossways Community Centre in Roxburgh Street.

Video from the Basin Reserve heritage walk

Over on the Save The Basin Reserve site there's a posting of the video shot on the recent Mt Victoria Historical Society heritage walk, hosted by local residents Joanne Newman and Alan Olliver.

Updated: Turns out we can also embed the video, so here it is:

Basin Reserve Historic Walk - Sunday 22 March, 2:30pm

The Mt Victoria Historical Society is hosting a guided tour of the Basin Reserve area, highlighting stories of cricket, canals, great events and fascinating people, from Mother Aubert to Waring Taylor, and associating them with the landmarks we see every day, including the Home of Compassion creche on the site where Mother Aubert founded her Wellington mission.

Date: Sunday March 22 (postponement date March 29), starting at 2.30 pm.
For more information and bookings, contact Joanna Newman on 385 2254 or at jonewman@xtra.co.nz

This is a particularly topical walk, given the threat to the Basin Reserve from the ill-considered flyover planned by the very government agencies that should be protecting this vital piece of Wellington's heritage.

Walk2Work Day this Wednesday

Councillor Celia Wade-Brown has sent through the following message about the annual Walk2Work Day - which happens this week.

Dear Wellingtonians!

Walk2Work day is just around the corner. So we would like to invite you to walk all or part of your daily journey! If it's too far to walk all the way, catch a bus, train or park your car or cycle on the edge of the city! Every metre walked counts!

We won!

The High Court has just issued a judgement in favour of the Mt Victoria Residents Association, after the Association sought a judicial review of the Wellington City Council's decision to issue a resource consent to the brothel at 103 Pirie St.
